The Silent Watcher of the Lily Pond

30 Jul 2026, 11:27 PM - by Kartheesh Gopalakrishnan
For years, I lived in silence beside a hidden lily pond, where the water mirrored the sky and every lily flower welcomed the morning sun. While the world rushed forward, I remained still, camera in hand, waiting for nature to reveal its secrets.

I was not just a bird photographer—I became part of the pond itself.

At dawn, the first birds arrived. Tiny kingfishers flashed like blue lightning over the water. Egrets landed gracefully between the lilies, their reflections rippling beneath them. Purple swamphens, jacanas and moorhens carefully stepped across floating leaves as though walking on water.

Through the Eyes of Lishaan

Every journey into the Western Ghats begins before sunrise.

The roads are quiet, wrapped in mist, while our car winds through forests, valleys, and mountain passes. My family has become my greatest companion on these adventures. They know that every trip isn't just a vacation—it's a search for wings, songs, and moments that last only seconds.

My son, Lishaan, sits beside me with a small pair of binoculars around his neck. At first, he only watched me. But over the years, he began spotting birds before I did.

The Mother's Secret

Bird photography has taught me that nature's greatest stories are often the ones we never expect.

One summer morning, I was sitting quietly beside a lily pond that had almost dried up. Nearly eighty percent of the water had disappeared, leaving behind patches of mud, scattered pools, and floating lily leaves. It looked like a struggling wetland, yet it was still full of life.

The White Weaver of Pongal

For many people, Pongal is a celebration of harvest, family, and tradition.

For me, it became the day nature gave me one of its rarest gifts.

My wife, my son *Lishaan*, and I had traveled to my wife's native village to celebrate Pongal with our family. The entire village was alive with excitement. Freshly harvested paddy was stacked in the fields, colorful kolams decorated every doorstep, sugarcane leaned against house walls, and the aroma of the Pongal pot filled the cool morning air.

The forest is never truly silent. Before the sun rises above the horizon, a chorus of birds begins to fill the air, creating one of nature's most mesmerizing performances. For wildlife photographers, these early hours offer the perfect opportunity to witness and capture birds at their most active and vibrant.
